Spencer Pratt shamelessly promotes his wife, Heidi Montag's Playboy magazine cover as they prepare to depart from LAX Airport. (Bauer Griffin)more pics » Heidi Montag (Bauer Griffin) It's been three years since Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt hit what is now easily recognizable as the white hot zenith of their reality fame. The two of them were so ubiquitous that bloggers began to band together in a half-hearted attempt to boycott coverage of the press-hungry pair.
After the summer of 2008 the two kept chugging along with weirder and weirder exploits until The Hills was canceled (they weren't invited to the finale party), and the pair was all but forgotten. Now, one epic failure of an album, 10 plastic surgeries, and innumerable burnt bridges later, they admit they were wrong.
In a new interview with the Daily Beast, Heidi and Spencer open up in what appears to be: A) the first honest interview they've given since they set foot on The Hills, and B) yet another contrived step in their now-failed reality fame experiment. Spencer and Heidi both acknowledge that their particular mix of "Reality" with actual reality hasn't worked very well. From the Daily Beast:
Spencer estimated they spent $2 million on Heidi’s ill-fated pop-music career, hiring writers, producers, and engineers who worked with Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Lady Gaga. There were lots of clothes, too. “I probably spent a million dollars on suits and fancy clothes,” Spencer said. “My whole million-dollar wardrobe—I would never wear that again. They’re props. Everything we were doing, we were buying props. I bought a big blue monster truck just to drive it on The Hills for an episode. Never drove it again.” Spencer goes on to explain that he thought he'd eventually be able to step out from behind his television persona to let people get to know his real self.
“I thought when this was all over, I could get on an interview and say, ‘It was all entertainment,'" he said. "I thought I was the Wizard of Oz, like, I’m the guy behind the curtain.”
So how did that work out?
Heidi: “We were wrong."
Spencer: “Very wrong."
