START BAD MUSIC CAREERS: When their reality TV presences lose steam, temporary celebrities can always try to gain relevance by pursuing a music career. The result? Some pretty pitiful songs/music videos that turn into media fodder.
In her debut music video, The Real Housewives of New York City's LuAnn De Lesseps walks around sultrily in a laced-up, corset nightgown while male models with slicked-back-hair fondle her as she sings "Money Can't Buy You Class." A song, we assume, no one bought.
Heidi Montag is something of a relentless pop music artist wannabee. She says on her website: "Growing up, I always had a passion for music." Her hubby and she reportedly went bankrupt paying for her first music video, "Higher," and she's since released two over-produced singles, "Superficial" and "Blackout." The video for "Superficial" is a montage with vignettes of her plastic surgery procedure, wedding day, appearances on the red carpet, and clips of her performing onstage in pink booty shorts.
Though Heidi and LuAnn are strong pop music offenders, they're in good company. Simon Van Kempen, another Housewives product, has also launched this excuse for a music career. (Don't mess with him, he's real.) And who can leave out Rebecca Black when discussing music videos and 15 minutes of fame? She's removed "Friday," her infamous viral video, from YouTube, but isn't finished chasing the spotlight. Check out her newest single, My Moment.
SIGN ON TO DANCING WITH THE STARS: This competition series has become what temporary celebrities see as their gateway to true fame, even if the show only promises one more TV season of exposure. Word has it the show's producers are trying to dump D-list contestants and only sign on "high profile" celebs, though it'll be hard for the series to shake a reputation it's gained over 12 seasons.
We've noticed The Bachelor franchise has fed many of its stars straight into DWTS. ABC's love-seekers Jake Pavelka, Melissa Rycroft and Trista Sutter have all gone on to the dance competition series, also an ABC property. Is this some sort of ploy by the network?Jake Pavelka: Pavelka signed onto the tenth season of DWTS in 2010 and was often seen making out with his wife-to-be from The Bachelor, Vienna Girardi, outside the show's studio. He was the fifth star to be eliminated, and not much later his relationship with said fiance went kaput.
Audrina Patridge: The Hills lady finished in seventh place on the 11th season of DWTS, and although she "wowed" judges, Patridge was dropped after five episodes. Regardless, she perseveres. Patridge now stars in a VH1 reality show, subtly named Audrina, that follows her life "journey" after The Hills.Bristol Palin: Sarah Palin's daughter was known as "the fighter" on DWTS's 11th season. Though critics couldn't stand the idea of her winning, Palin made it to the s finale, thanks to consistent fan votes. She finished the show in third place, overall.
Kate Gosselin: Reality TV's most famous mom was a contestant in the tenth season, but as judge Bruno Tonioli put it, "She's crap." There's been talk she'll look for love on The Bachelorette, but ABC denies the rumors. Her affection for DWTS, though, lives on. She's said her brood "lives and breathes" for the show.
Kendra Wilkinson: The former Girls Next Door star hit the dance floor – and aimed to lose some baby weight – on the twelfth season of DWTS. She was eliminated in the seventh week, and was a well-respected contestant. After a samba number to "Livin' La Vida Loca," one judge said she could "shimmy like no other."
BUILD A REALITY TV EMPIRE
After Kendra Wilkinson left The Girls Next Door, married Hank Baskett, and had a baby, she was at an ideal crossroads to start her own reality series. She teamed up with E! producers to develop a new show, Kendra, which focuses on her post-Playboy life. The series, which premiered in June of 2009, had the highest-rated reality debut for the network since 2002. Not too bad for a stage-two reality career!
Once the outspoken nonconformist on The Real Housewives of New York City, Bethenny Frankel's created a massive empire with her Skinnygirl brand of cocktails, recipes and diet books. She's also moved on from the cattiness of RHNY to star on two successful reality series about her family and business life, Bethenny Getting Married? and Bethenny Ever After. Holly Madison, another Girls Next Door star, moved on from the bunny mansion into her own comfort zone: Las Vegas! The now-burlesque performer stars in her own TV series, Holly's World, which revolves around her work life at Planet Hollywood in Sin City. "It's all good-natured and not mean like other reality shows," she said. "It's not a vanity credit." And if Hugh Hefner won't put a ring on it, why not make something of the exposure he gave you?
POSE FOR PLAYBOY:
Heidi Montag was the cover girl – smeared in mud with a Playboy emblen etched out on her stomach – for Playboy's September 2009 issue. She didn't fully strip for the shoot, but the pictures were plenty risque. Kelly Bensimon has been modeling since the '80s, and she posed for Playboy's March 2010 cover to "show the world that a 41-year old mother of two can be sexy!" she told Us. Also, her ex-husband Gilles Bensimon photographed her for the shoot, but she didn't pose full-frontal nude because she wanted to keep the pictures "evocative."
Levi Johnston, who's mostly famous for being the baby dadda to Bristol Palin's kid, posed for Playgirl's cover in early 2010. The issue, which boasted the headline "Levi Johnston Goes Rogue," was the magazine's debut re-launch for the print market (it had appeared only online since March 2009). That makes Johnston famous in some unconventional way, right?
